Getting started
Can I get Gretl yet?
Not yet. Gretl is in closed beta, ahead of release on the App Store and Google Play. There is nothing to install from this site today — the store badges on the front page are greyed out for that reason.
How do I log a meal?
Write it the way you'd say it out loud. “Two eggs and toast” is a complete entry — there's no food database to search, nothing to weigh and no portion dropdowns. Add detail when you have it and Gretl uses it; leave it out and it estimates.
Can I log from a photo?
Yes. Tap + and take a picture of the plate, or pick one from your library. Gretl reads it and logs what it sees; you can correct it in the same breath — “that was a bigger bowl than it looks”. Photos are kept for a short window so the meal still shows its picture, then deleted.
What's a favorite, and how do I save one?
A meal you eat often, saved with its exact numbers so it never drifts. Tap a logged meal and choose Save as favorite, or just ask Gretl to. Logging one again takes a tap and costs you nothing — it doesn't ask the AI anything, so it never counts against a daily message allowance.
Can I log something for yesterday?
Yes. Use the arrows either side of the date at the top of the home screen to move to the day you mean, then log as usual. You can also just say so — “I forgot, I had a bagel at breakfast” — and Gretl adds it to the day you're looking at.
Your numbers
Where does my daily target come from?
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, applied to your sex, age, height, weight, goal and chosen pace — and the app shows its working, so you can see your BMR, your TDEE and the daily deficit rather than just a number. From there it adapts to the energy balance your own logs and weigh-ins actually show, and it asks before it moves. Prefer your own number? Set a custom target in Settings → Goal & Body Stats and Gretl will track against that instead, though never below a safe floor.
A calorie estimate looks wrong.
Tell Gretl — “that was closer to 600” — and it will correct the entry. You can also tap a logged meal to edit it directly. The estimate is a starting point, and being roughly right every day beats being exactly right once.
Do I have to track everything?
No — calories and macros are the baseline, and the rest is your call. Cholesterol is off until you turn it on, water is on until you turn it off, both in Settings. Off means gone everywhere: the home screen, Trends, the watch, its reminders, and the coach. Anything you already logged is kept, so turning it back on brings the history with it.
What's “active energy”, and should I eat it back?
It's what your watch or phone thinks you burned moving today, shown for interest. It is not a budget: it never moves your calorie target, and it isn't something to eat back. If you log a workout in chat, Gretl estimates its burn too, and the number you see is the larger of the two rather than the sum — adding them would count one workout twice.
I track my workouts in another app — will Gretl see them?
On iPhone, yes, as long as that app writes to Apple Health. Gretl reads active energy from Apple Health and doesn't care which app put it there — Strava, Nike Run Club, Peloton and Garmin all write to it, usually behind a switch in their own settings called something like Connect to Apple Health, which you say yes to once.
To check what an app is actually allowed to do: open Apple's Health app, tap your profile picture in the top corner, then under Privacy tap Apps. Every app that has ever asked is listed there, with the data it reads and the data it writes. Gretl appears in that list too, with read access only — it never writes anything back.
On Android, Gretl doesn't read Health Connect yet, so active energy stays blank there for now.
I use Google Health (or Fitbit) — how do I get those workouts into Gretl?
Turn on sharing from Google Health into Apple Health, which is where Gretl reads. Google added this direction in Google Health 5.05 (August 2026) — before that the connection only ran the other way, which is why you may have looked for the switch and not found it.
- Update Google Health to 5.05 or later.
- Tap your profile icon → Partner apps → Apple Health.
- Follow the prompts, and when iOS asks which data to allow, include Exercise and Active Energy — those two are what Gretl reads. Extra categories do no harm.
- Already connected Apple Health before this? That connection was read-only, so it won't start sharing on its own. Open the same screen and tap Review permissions to grant the new types — without this step nothing new appears, and the connection looks fine the whole time.
Then it flows automatically: Google Health → Apple Health → Gretl. Workouts show up as active energy, and workout days get badged on your Trends chart. Heart-rate variability is the one thing Google doesn't pass along, which doesn't matter here — Gretl never reads it.
If you'd rather not connect anything, just tell Gretl: “ran 5k this morning” logs the workout and estimates the burn. That's also the only route that puts the workout in your Gretl history rather than only its calorie number. Either way it's shown for interest and never changes your calorie target.
Gretl Pro & billing
What costs money?
Almost nothing. Your history, trends, charts, weigh-ins, water, the watch apps, exporting your data and re-logging a saved favorite are free and stay free. What's limited is talking to Gretl, because every message runs an AI model we pay for: a free account gets 3 messages a day, shared with Siri and the watch, resetting daily. Gretl Pro raises that to 50 a day and unlocks the adaptive check-in, which retunes your calorie target from your own intake and weigh-ins.
What does Gretl Pro cost?
- Gretl Pro Monthly — US$7.99, renewing every month.
- Gretl Pro Yearly — US$34.00, renewing every year.
New subscribers get a 7-day free trial. Those are United States prices; the App Store and Google Play set prices per country, and the app always shows yours — in your currency, including tax — before you confirm.
Payment is charged to your App Store or Google Play account when you confirm the purchase. A subscription renews automatically for the same period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the current period ends, and the renewal is charged within the 24 hours before that. You can cancel at any time in your store account. Full detail is in the Terms of Use, and what we do with your data is in the Privacy Policy.
How does the free trial work?
New subscribers get 7 days free. The store decides who is eligible and enforces the end date — we don't count the days. The trial is available once per Apple ID or Google account across both plans, so trying one uses it up for the other. Cancel before it ends and you are not charged. If you buy a subscription while a trial is still running, the unused part of that trial is forfeited.
How do I cancel my subscription or free trial?
In your store account, not in Gretl — we can't cancel it for you.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Gretl → Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Play Store → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Gretl → Cancel subscription.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends, or it renews. You keep Gretl Pro until the end of the period you've already paid for, then go back to the free allowance with every log, trend and favorite intact.
How do I switch between monthly and yearly?
In the same place you cancel. On iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Gretl, then pick the other plan. On Android: Play Store → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Gretl → Manage. The store handles the proration and tells you what you'll be charged before you confirm.
I paid but the app still shows a paywall.
Open Settings → Gretl Pro → Restore purchases. That re-checks with the App Store or Play Store, and fixes the usual causes — a reinstall, a new phone, or a purchase that landed while you were offline. If it still says otherwise, make sure the device is signed in to the same store account you bought with, then email support@gretl.ai.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by whoever sold you the subscription, under their policy, not by us. Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com. Google: through the Play Store's order history. Email us anyway if something went wrong and we'll help you chase it. If you're a consumer in the EU or the UK, your statutory right to withdraw applies against the store as the seller.
I bought on iPhone — does it work on my other devices?
On any device signed in to the same Gretl account and the same store account you bought with, yes — including your watch. Across platforms it doesn't: Apple and Google sell separately and neither can see the other's purchase, so a subscription bought on iPhone can't be moved to Android. Cancel the one you no longer use before buying on the other.
Does deleting the app or my account cancel my subscription?
No — neither does. A subscription lives in your App Store or Play account, which we can't reach. Cancel it there first, or you'll keep being billed for an app you no longer have.
Watch, Siri & reminders
Is there a watch app?
Yes, on both Apple Watch and Wear OS. Pair it from Settings and you can log by voice from your wrist and see the day's rings without getting your phone out. Watch messages come out of the same daily allowance as the phone.
Can I log with Siri?
Yes — say it to Siri and it goes straight into the day, no app to open. Like the watch, it draws on the same daily message allowance.
Will it nag me?
Only if you ask it to. Every notification is off by default. Meal and water reminders are scheduled on your own phone at times you choose, and you can turn them off just as easily. Nothing is ever sent about your logs or what the coach thinks of them, and there are no streaks to break.
Which model answers me?
You pick, in Settings → Coach. Gretl runs the coach on its own account, so there's no key to paste, nothing to configure and no separate bill for it — you sign up and start logging. The list is a handful of models we've checked can read a photo of a plate and do the arithmetic.
Your data
Can I get my data out?
Settings → Export my data sends you a ZIP of plain spreadsheets — meals, weigh-ins, water, targets, chat. It's yours; there is nothing to unlock and it isn't a paid feature.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings → Delete account. It erases your profile, meals, weigh-ins, water, chat and notification settings immediately and permanently. It cannot be undone. There's more detail on the data deletion page.
It does not cancel a subscription. That lives in your App Store or Play account, which we can't reach — cancel it there first.
What happens if I stop using Gretl?
Nothing, for three months. After 90 days without opening the app we email you to say the account is scheduled for deletion, and you get 30 more days after that. Opening the app in the meantime cancels it completely — there's nothing to click and no setting to find.
If you'd like a copy first, Settings → Export my data gives you the lot as spreadsheets. If you've ever subscribed, your account is never deleted this way.
What do you do with my data?
It is never sold, and there is no analytics SDK in the app. The Privacy Policy lists every third party involved and what each one receives.
Safety
If food or your body has become hard to think about
Calorie tracking helps a lot of people and hurts some. If eating, or how you feel about your body, has become distressing — or if tracking is making it worse rather than better — you can talk to someone who does this for a living. You don't have to be sure anything is wrong first.
In the US, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders runs a free helpline answered by licensed clinicians, Monday to Friday:
1-866-662-1235
allianceforeatingdisorders.com
— including a directory of treatment providers you can search by location and insurance.
Outside the US, contact a local eating-disorder organization. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services — Gretl is not a crisis service.
Is Gretl medical advice?
No. It's decision support. For eating disorders, diabetes, medications, or unsafe goals, please talk to a qualified professional.
How low can my target go?
Not below a floor we compute from your own body — the higher of a fixed minimum and your estimated resting energy need (BMR). It is never below what you burn lying still, whichever goal or pace you choose, and a custom target you type in is raised to it rather than saved as entered. The floor is enforced on our servers, not just in the app, so it holds even for a modified client.
One consequence worth knowing: because the starting maintenance estimate is deliberately conservative, the faster pace options are often unavailable at first. As Gretl measures your real maintenance from your own logs and weigh-ins, usually within a couple of weeks, they open up.
Why won't Gretl give me a weight-loss target?
Because your height and weight put you at or below a BMI of 18.5, or because a goal weight you've set would. At that point the app calculates maintenance instead — what your body appears to need — and says so rather than quietly showing you a smaller number. No pace setting, custom target or goal changes it.
This isn't a judgment about you, and it isn't permanent. It's a line an app doesn't have the standing to cross: whether losing weight from here is a good idea is a question for a doctor or a registered dietitian, who can actually examine you. If you'd like to talk it through with someone, the helpline above is a good place to start.
The coach won't answer something. Why?
Gretl's coach declines a specific set of things and will keep declining them however the question is put. It won't plan or price out a day below your calorie floor, won't design fasting or meal-skipping to make up for eating, won't treat exercise as a way to cancel food, won't give any method of purging or compensating, and won't tell you what you ought to weigh. Framing it as a hypothetical, as a question for a friend, or as something you're doing under professional supervision doesn't change the answer.
Everything else it does normally — estimating a restaurant meal, telling you where a drink lands you, being honest when a week went over. The limits are narrow on purpose; a coach that hedges everything is one you'd stop telling the truth to.
Why is Gretl 18+?
Because the math doesn't work otherwise. Gretl computes your target with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which was derived from adults and has no term for growth — a body that's still growing needs energy the equation doesn't know about. A target from it wouldn't be conservative or aggressive, it would just be wrong, and it would be wrong while looking exactly as confident as everyone else's.
The second reason is simpler: putting a daily calorie limit in front of a teenager isn't a product we want to build. Both app stores list Gretl as 18+, and the app won't calculate a target for a younger age.
Does Gretl reward me for eating less?
No, and this is deliberate. There are no streaks to break, no badges, no congratulations for a low day and no scolding for a high one. Nothing in the app treats eating less as a score, because a tracker that rewards restriction is a tracker that teaches it. The only figure Gretl encourages you to reach rather than stay under is fiber, if you turn it on.
If you'd rather not see a target at all, Observe mode (Settings → Goal & Body Stats) tracks everything against nothing — your rings fill as the day goes and there's no number to come in under.
